What's the Metaverse?

Updated: Jul 28, 2024

The metaverse can best be described as a digital world where people can do some of the same things that they do in the real world by using augmented, or virtual reality (VR).

The metaverse is like the landscape for an immersive experience. It's usually a graphically rich space (accessed via the internet) where people can socialize and play games.

If you've ever watched the movie Ready Player One than you might understand that Wade Watts is playing a game (in a metaverse setting) called OASIS.

But the metaverse isn't just about playing games. You can shop, host work meetings, and even attend music concerts in the metaverse.

For example, I recently went to a live concert (via my smart phone) with a new app called the Stageverse. After downloading their free app, signing up and choosing an avatar, I headed into the arena and watched a musician broadcast live from inside the Stageverse. The performer (located miles and miles away) was right in front of me, performing on a huge theater screen.

The room had theater seats just like a real concert arena and I could interact with the other concert goers. It was a cool new experience. But I think that the next time I head into the Stageverse, I'll log in with my VR Meta Quest to make it an even more immersive experience!

In my opinion, connecting people from all over the world to enjoy a common experience (in a beautiful digital environment) is really what the metaverse is all about.
